Kronum

History of Kronum

  • "Kronum was first created in 2006, by Bill Gibson, in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The sport was create to combine elements of the world’s most popular sport on to one field. Gibson wanted to create a sport for the modern athlete and to displayed human athleticism at its fullest."

  • Gibson created all aspects of the game including: the ball, the field, the goals, and the rules.

  • "Gibson created the ball to be kicked like a soccer ball, dribble like a basketball, and throw like a handball."

  • The Kronum goal that was created by Gibson consists of two main regions. The two main regions of the goal are:

    • Main region is called the Chamber

    • Secondary region is called the Crown Rings. The Crown Rings atop of the Chamber consists of 5 18” circler openings that count as double the amount of points compared to the Chamber. (Refer to picture three on the page for a look at the goal)

  • The first field created was called the Kronum Round. At first it was 70 yards in diameter, but later downsized to 50 yards. The field is divided into four main zones: Goal Zone, Wedge Zone, Flex Zone, and Cross Zone

  • November 2008, First official Kronum game

  • K2 Kronum Ball created in 2008, as seen in the picture below

Rules of the Game

  • The use of hands are allowed every where on the field beside the Wedge Zone. If a hand violation occurs in the Wedge Zone it results in a turnover and change of possesion.

  • "On defense you can only clear the ball out of the Wedge Zone with a closed fist, if the use of hands occur it will result in a penalty shot for the offense"

  • After a score, save, or turnover the ball must be taken back to the 2nd ring to transition possession, this can be considered a “take-back line”

  • "A player may control the ball with their feet or dribble with their hands. A player must take only two steps before they are required to do something with the ball if not it will be considered a turnover"

  • Physical contact is allowed although excessive contact will result in a penalty kick

Game Play

  • Every game consists of three 20 minute periods

  • Two teams, each with 10 players on the field

  • At the start of each period a Prime Rush occurs

    • "The referee bouncing the ball inside the first ring. Two players from each team enter the Second Ring to gain possession of the ball. Some teams will send players immediately towards each goal so they are in position to score or defend."

  • There are multiple ways to score: you may kick the ball, throw the ball, or if you are in the Goal Zone you can dunk the ball through the Crown Rings.

  • There are three different positions:

    • "Wedge back: Considered to be the goalie. One wedge back plays in each of the goal zones to defend the goal (4 players since there are four goals)

    • Ranger: Position before the wedge back consists of one Ranger for each goal (4 players).  Can either help defend the goal or help score

    • Crosser: two remaining players focus on possession of the ball and assisting on scoring play"

  • The field is divided into four sections with different amount of points awarded

    • Goal Zone: 1 point

    • Wedge zone: 2 points

    • Flex zone: 2 point

    • Cross Zone/ 2nd Ring: 4 points

    • As previously noted, scoring in any of these zone through the Crown Rings the amount doubles
